CASUAL CREATIVE WRITING CLASS
An intimate writing group held once a month where you are guided through writing prompts and techniques. Explore different forms of creative writing including prose, poetry, and life writing. There are opportunities for constructive discussion but this is not a group where you bring along pre-written work for critiquing. The writing happens on the night. Casual and low pressure, you’ll be surprised and pleased at how much you can write in a few short hours in the structured, supportive environment of this group. Suitable for beginners, the time poor, or those who simply like to write and want to learn more about how it’s done. Each session includes a handout of writing exercises for you to take home.

When: 1st Tuesday of the month
Time: 7-9pm (2 hours)
Cost: $25pp per session
SHORT STORY COURSE
STARTS Mid 2018

A more focussed approach to writing than the casual group. Over seven sessions, writers are guided through the fundamentals of storytelling such as characterisation, point of view, dialogue and metaphor. Each session includes writing exercises and reading, reflection and discussion. Participants learn more about their own writing by reading and critiquing the work of others. Extended writing exercises are completed at home between the fortnightly sessions. At the end of the course writers have completed a piece of flash fiction (1000 words) and gained a deeper understanding of the elements of writing fiction, and their own writing practice. Resources include ‘A Reader’ and fortnightly handouts.

When: 4th Tuesday & 2nd Wednesday of the month
Time: 7-9pm (2 hours)
Cost: $245, paid in advance ($35 per session)
(Group maximum of 6)

A word from Caroline
Having taught and been an artist in the community for many years, I’m passionate about creating a safe, welcoming space in which people can write, discover new ideas and share their work. So the cosy rooms at Mockingbird are ideal. When the atmosphere is friendly and the groups small, it makes the process of writing so much more pleasurable, encouraging people to take creative risks. The discoveries writers make when engaged in intense creative work are not only about the writing process, but about themselves. For me, witnessing people make these discoveries is the most pleasurable element of teaching.
