The tawny frogmouth is a master of disguise and one of Australia’s most beloved nocturnal birds. Often mistaken for owls, they are actually more closely related to nightjars and are famous for their incredible camouflage. They perch completely still during the day, blending into tree branches so well they look like part of the bark. Tawny frogmouths have large, wide frog-like mouths which they use to snatch up insects, spiders, worms, and even small frogs or mice at night. They are usually seen in pairs or family groups and mate for life, sharing parenting duties when raising their fluffy chicks.
